Sexual medicine refers to the diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunctions which occur via a complex and unique combination of physical, emotional, and relationship causes.

Sexual dysfunction refers to problems with desire, arousal, and/or orgasm. These problems are common throughout adulthood from the late twenties throughout the lifespan. Sexual dysfunction can be the result of medical conditions, injuries, side effects of medications, hormone deficiencies, lifestyle issues (such as drugs and alcohol), emotional difficulties, and relationship problems. Therefore a comprehensive evaluation and any treatment interventions for sexual dysfunction must consider all such causes.

Sexual Desire Disorder is characterized by a lack of sexual desire. The causes can include hormone deficiencies (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in women, and testosterone in men), fatigue, side effects of medications, depression, anxiety, and/or stressors in the relationship.

Sexual Arousal Disorders are characterized by partial or complete failure to attain or maintain an erection, or a lack of sexual excitement and pleasure in sexual activity. Medical causes such as decreased blood flow to the genitals and lack of vaginal lubrication, health problems such as chronic disease, as well as emotional, and relationship problems can contribute to this disorder.

Orgasm Disorders are persistent delays or absence of orgasm following a normal sexual excitement phase. Causes include genital trauma (including post surgical complications), chronic disease, medication side effects, hormone deficiencies, alcoholism, depression, and grief.

Sexual Pain Disorders affect women almost exclusively and are typically the result of insufficient lubrication. The causes can include insufficient excitement or stimulation, hormone deficiencies, contraceptive side effects, trauma, fear, or anxiety.
